3GWh Large-format Cylindrical Sodium-ion Battery Manufacturing Base Approved for Construction in Jingzhou

2026-07-02

Project Overview: RMB 1.5 Billion Investment for 3GWh Annual Production Capacity

Developed and fully funded by Taiji Sodium (Jingzhou) Technology Co., Ltd., the firm was registered in Jingzhou in June 2026 with a registered capital of RMB 50 million, backed by Yunnan Industrial Investment Group, a provincial state-owned industrial investment enterprise in Yunnan Province.
Total planned investment: RMB 1.5 billion
Land use: 121 mu
Total construction area: around 97,000 square meters
Production setup: Two fully automated intelligent production lines — one for large-format cylindrical Sodium-Ion Cell manufacturing, the other for energy storage PACK & module assembly. Supporting facilities include a dedicated R&D and testing center, warehouses, office and employee amenities.
Construction is scheduled to kick off in September 2026. Upon full operation, the site will deliver an annual output of 3GWh large-format cylindrical sodium-ion cells plus matching energy storage modules. The finished products will be applied widely in grid-side energy storage, commercial & industrial peak-valley arbitrage energy storage, and backup power supply for AI data center infrastructure.

Technical Edge: Large-format Cylindrical Sodium-ion Cells Optimized for Energy Storage Scenarios

The project adopts large-format steel-cased cylindrical sodium-ion Battery technology well-suited for long-duration energy storage operation, addressing core pain points in the energy storage sector with four prominent strengths:
  1. Enhanced safety performance: Rigid steel shell structure mitigates gas expansion issues common in sodium-ion batteries during charge and discharge cycles, effectively slowing capacity degradation, electrolyte leakage and thermal runaway risks, improving safety standards for large-scale energy storage power stations.
  2. Higher single-cell capacity: Larger cell volume accommodates more active electrode materials to lift individual cell capacity and simplify system assembly design.
  3. Cost-efficient mature manufacturing: Winding and full-tab production processes are commercially proven, enabling continuous cost reduction through mass-scale production.
  4. Superior system integration efficiency: Compared with prismatic and pouch cells, cylindrical cells deliver higher system grouping efficiency with fewer required BMS management channels, lowering overall BOM cost of complete energy storage systems.
Complementing these design merits, sodium-ion chemistry features natural advantages: sodium resources are vastly abundant worldwide; aluminum current collectors can replace expensive copper foil to cut raw material spending significantly. The cells retain over 90% of rated capacity at -40 °C ultra-low temperature, making them adaptable for wind-solar paired energy storage and commercial & industrial energy arbitrage projects across diverse climate regions.

Location Advantages in Jingzhou for Integrated Industrial Supply Chain

Sited in Jingzhou Economic & Technological Development Zone, the project gains dual benefits from geographic location and industrial clustering, forming sustainable cost competitiveness:
  • Local raw material supply: The region hosts concentrated phosphorus and salt chemical industrial clusters, enabling local supply of sodium, phosphorus, iron and other key feedstocks for sodium-ion batteries to slash long-distance logistics expenses.
  • Convenient waterborne transportation: Positioned alongside the middle reaches of the Yangtze River with complete inland shipping infrastructure, the site provides cost-effective outbound transportation for finished cells and energy storage modules.
  • Policy support: Classified as a key investment project of the development zone, it enjoys favorable policies covering land use, industrial subsidies and comprehensive administrative matching support.
  • Regional energy storage industrial aggregation: Jingzhou has attracted multiple large-scale lithium and sodium battery new energy projects valued at billions of RMB, fostering upstream-downstream synergy for the local energy storage ecosystem.

Market Significance

Backed by Yunnan Industrial Investment Group, the project marks a strategic industrial layout in advanced sodium-ion energy storage. Sodium-ion battery commercialization is accelerating globally in 2026, with energy storage representing the largest application segment of sodium-ion demand. Large-format cylindrical cell designs are gaining rising market penetration in stationary storage.
Once commissioned, the 3GWh Jingzhou manufacturing base will fill the supply gap for large-capacity sodium-ion cells across central China, offering stable cell supply for local renewable power plants, data center operators and commercial & industrial energy storage end-users.
