Chinese Research Team Announces Breakthrough in Sodium-Ion Battery Technology

2025-04-15

Amid fierce global competition in renewable energy, sodium-ion technology addresses two critical challenges: lithium resource scarcity and safety concerns. The research team optimized the Battery’s electrolyte composition to minimize combustion risks and enhance thermal stability. "Our technology has entered pilot production and could achieve commercial application within two years," said Professor Zhang, the project lead.

Key Advantages Over lithium-ion batteries

  1. Sustainability: Sodium, abundant in China with proven reserves exceeding 15,000 tons, offers a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to lithium. Production processes reduce carbon emissions by 60%.
  2. Cost Efficiency: Raw material expenses are approximately one-third of those for lithium-ion batteries, potentially lowering prices for electric vehicles (EVs) and Energy Storage systems.
  3. Safety: Rigorous testing confirms negligible fire or explosion risks under extreme conditions, addressing widespread safety concerns associated with lithium batteries.
  4. Low temperature performance: Especially in cold areas performance is superior

Industry experts highlight the technology’s transformative potential. A researcher from Tsinghua University’s Energy Institute noted, "Scalable adoption could redefine global battery supply chains." Public interest has surged, with social media users applauding the progress: "This could end range anxiety for EVs" and "Hope to see these batteries hit the market soon."

Over 5,400 patents filed in China dominate the sodium-ion battery sector, dwarfing Japan’s 1,192 and the U.S.’s 719 patents. The innovation has drawn rare praise from Nikkei Asia, which acknowledged China’s growing leadership in next-gen energy technologies. Major automakers and energy firms are already in talks to license the technology. Government agencies have pledged policy support to accelerate industrialization, including subsidies for pilot projects and infrastructure upgrades.

While lithium-ion batteries remain dominant in consumer electronics and EVs, sodium-ion variants are poised to disrupt grid storage, drones, and heavy machinery markets. With China controlling vast sodium reserves and a mature manufacturing ecosystem, analysts predict accelerated adoption across energy-intensive sectors.

This breakthrough arrives as lithium-ion batteries face scrutiny over safety incidents, including post-collision fires in EVs. Sodium-ion technology’s stability and lower volatility position it as a safer, scalable solution for global decarbonization efforts.

As a leading enterprise in China's sodium electricity industry, Zhongna Era has a number of core patents, and has established a pilot production line with a clear mass production time. In particular, we have a super factory in Maanshan, Anhui Province, China, which is supported by local government projects to promote technology conversion and production.
