What is a battery management system?

A battery management system (BMS) is a technology specifically designed to monitor and control a Battery Pack, which consists of battery cells arranged in a matrix of rows and columns to stably supply a target range of voltage and current to a device under the expected load for a specific period of time.

The oversight that a BMS provides usually includes:
●Monitoring the battery
●Reporting operational status to external devices
●Providing battery protection
●Continually optimizing Battery Performance
●Estimating the battery’s operational state
Here, "battery" means the whole pack. But the monitoring and control are for individual cells or cell groups called modules in the pack.
Lithium-ion rechargeable cells have the highest energy density and are the standard for many consumer product battery packs, like laptops and electric vehicles. They perform well but can be dangerous if used outside the tight SOA, with effects from poor performance to real hazards.
The BMS has a challenging job, and its complexity and oversight cover many disciplines like electrical, digital, control, thermal, and hydraulic.
